Sport and Leisure in and Around Frome

If you are looking for an active break in and around Frome there are many possibilities.

The Leisure Centre offers a wide range of activities including swimming, indoor bowls, squash, gym etc. Opening times vary according to school terms / holidays. For details contact 01373 465446 or www.avalonleisure.co.uk.

Junction 21 is an indoor soft play centre for children of all ages with a café. Open Mon - Fri 9.30am - 6pm, Sat - Sun 10am - 5pm. 01373 453670.

Victoria Park offers Bowls, Tennis, Putting, Skateboard ramps and a Childrens’ Playground. There is also a Children’s Playground at Welshmill Road. There is another skatepark beside the Cheese and Grain hall.

The Millennium Green
is a semi wild open space for local wildlife. There are walks and a picnic area.

Walking in the Mendip Hills

Frome is an ideal centre for walking with routes to suit all tastes. There is a Heritage Trail around the town exploring the hidden gems of historic and architectural interest. There are short country walks beginning from the town and a whole range of Village Trails and Rural Walks from the surrounding villages.

For the more enthusiastic rambler the Mendip Way begins at Frome and stretches the length of the Mendip Hills to finish at the sea near Weston super Mare. More details can be found on the Publications page.

There are also opportunities for cyclists. Sustrans route 24, the Colliers Way runs from Frome via Radstock to Dundas, linking into the Kennet & Avon canal. Much of the route is off road along an old railway line and along with the canal towpath offers safe level cycling or walking for all ages. For more details see: www.colliersway.co.uk.

Every Sunday morning the local section of the Cyclists Touring Club has an organised ride and welcomes guest riders, either local, or visitors to the town. A current list of rides is available from the Tourist Information Centre or visit www.ctcwest.org.uk/frome/.

In September 2009 the Tour of Britain came to Frome bringing all the spectacle of 96 professional cyclists right to the heart of the town. A local golf course

For the keen golfer there is a choice of two courses in Frome. There are many others in the area, for a full printable list see the Resource Centre.

There are also plenty of local Riding Stables offering lessons, hacking and even Western style riding. Full printable list in the Resource Centre.

For anyone who enjoys the thrill of horse racing both Bath and Wincanton racecourses are within easy reach (15 – 20 miles). Enjoy flat racing at Bath: www.bath-racecourse.co.uk or jump racing at Wincanton: www.wincantonracecourse.co.uk.

There are plenty of local fishing waters, an introductory list is also available in the Resource Centre including local tackle shops for further expert advice.
